The Rail District is analyzing alternatives for regional passenger rail in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor. One alternative for the proposed 110-mile commuter rail system would use the existing Union Pacific right-of-way that parallels IH 35. Passenger rail service would run from Georgetown to San Antonio with additional stations in Austin, Round Rock, Buda/Kyle, San Marcos, and New Braunfels.

The regional passenger rail system, which would connect the Austin and San Antonio metropolitan areas, is being studied as one approach to easing traffic congestion on IH 35 and providing a safe and reliable travel alternative.

The passenger rail system is one part of a three-step strategy to reduce congestion on IH 35, improve freight mobility, speed NAFTA trade between Laredo and Dallas, and spur economic development in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor:

  1. Build State Highway 130
  2. Re-route Union Pacific's through freight
  3. Develop regional passenger rail
