IH-35 through the Austin-San Antonio Corridor is the deadliest and most congested highway in America, with over 100 fatalities a year just in the 110 miles between Georgetown and San Antonio.
Recent studies show that congestion for freight and motorists is costing us hundreds of millions of dollars a year in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor. Unless new alternatives are found to our traditional modes of travel, ever-rising traffic fatalities, urban sprawl, rapidly deteriorating air quality, economic stagnation, increased congestion, and increasingly frustrated motorists are our certain future.
New highways, increasingly more expensive to build, are often filled to capacity almost as soon as they are completed. Our Corridor — bounded to the west by the Edwards Plateau, the Edwards Aquifer, and the Hill Country — presents unique environmental challenges in trying to find new highway routes to accommodate growth.
