In 2005 the citizens of Texas approved a constitutional amendment creating the Texas Rail Relocation and Improvement Fund.
The purpose of the fund is to relocate and improve public or private rail facilities. The Rail Relocation Fund could be used throughout the State to improve freight mobility and relieve traffic congestion.
In the Austin-San Antonio Corridor, the fund could be used to relocate Union Pacific's through-freight away from the heavily populated cities in the corridor.
In 2009 the State Legislature will consider dedicating a revenue source to fund the Rail Relocation Fund.
The Rail District approved a Resolution of Support for an annual appropriation to the Rail Relocation Fund. The Rail District is working with communities and organizations throughout the Austin-San Antonio Corridor and urging them to approve similar resolutions. The resolutions will be sent to the local legislative delegation.
