The Rail District is currently examining the costs and economic benefits of developing regional passenger rail in the Austin-San Antonio Corridor.
To determine the feasibility of regional passenger rail, the District is conducting several essential tasks:
- Adopting strategies to ensure regular and ongoing public outreach and involvement
- Initiating alternatives analysis, preliminary engineering, and environmental clearance
- Developing multi-year funding strategies with federal, state, regional and local partners
- Launching a detailed economic development analysis
- Clarifying the Union Pacific relocation situation and developing alternatives
Once the Rail District determines that regional passenger rail is, indeed, technically and financially feasible, the District would proceed to right-of-way acquisition and construction. If all tasks continue on schedule, passenger rail service could begin as early as 2012.
